GSP Rushfit DVD Overview
First of all, I couldn’t have made a better video myself than the one I’m posting below. It’s not my review, but I agree with most of what he says. I’ll expand with my thoughts below.
As you may know, Rushfit was produced by Georges St-Pierre, the welterweight UFC champion in mixed martial arts. He and his trainer Erik Owings take you through 6 DVDs incorporating a wide variety of workouts, but focusing on explosive style movements and fitness training.
I’ve been through the Rushfit 8-week course myself (see my full GSP Rushfit review here where I chart my progress), and I must say it is a worthy addition to anybody’s workout DVD collection. The production values are high, and as for the workout, they really push you hard. I started to look forward to pushing through the pain each time I trained.
Here is how each GSP workout DVD is broken down. There are 6 DVDs when you buy the full set:
1) Strength & Endurance
2) Abdominal Strength & Core Conditioning
3) Fight Conditioning
4) Explosive Power Training
5) Full Body Strength & Conditioning Workout
6) Stretching For Flexibility, and bonus workout ‘Balance & Agility’
So that’s 7 workouts in 6 DVDs. The full set currently costs $89.99. The big question you might have is, ‘Is it worth it?’
In my opinion, it definitely is. It’s actually a chance to go through the same kind of workout that one of the most well-conditioned athletes in the world does to stay on top of his game. He has been welterweight champion since 2008, and that is no easy task.
Each workout is roughly 35 minutes long, with very intense circuit training techniques. You train hard for about 5 minutes, then take a minute’s rest, then move onto the next circuit and so on.
These are preceded by a warm-up routine and followed by a cool-down period.
Also included alongside the DVDs are:
The training calendar is awesome because it will easily remind you of which exercises to do each day. On top of that, you can decide whether you wish to follow the beginner, intermediate or advanced path, and that’s all laid out in the calendar as well. It’s entirely up to you. You can also chart your progress as you go along, which I found extremely helpful, not only to remind myself of what I’ve achieved and see how far I’ve come, but to motivate me to keep going all the way.
One of the great things about it too is that you don’t need a load of expensive equipment to make this work. Just a bit of space in your own living room, a DVD player and perhaps a set of dumbbells. As mentioned in the video above, it’s great to work out in the privacy of your own home.
You don’t need dumbbells for every exercise, and they certainly don’t have to be super heavy either. 15 to 20 pounds to start off with is fine – by the end of the exercises you’ll certainly feel the strain, even if you’re the kind to think that isn’t very heavy. The way the Rushfit DVDs are designed is that you push yourself to do maximum repetitions, and that’s why it doesn’t matter so much how heavy you go on the weights. You build your strength and endurance from the intensity and the reps you do.
The nutrition guide is also necessary to complete a proper workout package. No workout will bring you the results you need on its own – a correct diet is also a must. I tend to follow a diet I found in the book ‘4-Hour Body’ by Timothy Ferriss, but the nutrition guide included is very sensible and will do most people good if they follow it closely.
So for $89.99, you get over 9 hours of training videos in the GSP Rushfit DVDs, with 7 different workouts over an 8-week course. Thanks to the different difficulty levels, this training program is really suitable for anyone.
